How long does artificial turf last?

Quality artificial turf lasts 15-25 years with proper care. Premium turf with UV stabilizers and durable backing maintains color and integrity longer than economy grades. Cheaper turf may last only 8-10 years. We use turf rated for California's intense sun and high UV exposure, since lower-grade turf in full sun can degrade noticeably within just a few seasons of installation.

How much does artificial turf cost?

Installed artificial turf ranges from $18-$60 per square foot, depending on turf quality and features. Economy turf runs $18-$25/sq ft, premium turf $28-$38/sq ft, pet-friendly turf $32-$45/sq ft, and putting green turf $45-$60/sq ft. For a 500 sq ft lawn, expect $9,000-$30,000. This includes removal of existing lawn, base preparation, and professional installation.

Does artificial turf get hot in summer?

Yes, artificial turf can get warm on hot days. Surface temperatures can reach 120-150 degrees in direct sun. Solutions include lighter-colored turf blades, infill with cooling properties, partial shade structures, and rinsing the surface with water before barefoot use. Turf cools quickly once shaded. Pet-friendly grades typically run cooler than the cheaper, denser commercial-grade products.

Is artificial turf good for dogs?

Yes. Pet-friendly turf has drainage holes for liquids, antimicrobial backing to prevent odors, and durable construction designed for high pet traffic. We use zeolite infill, which neutralizes pet urine odor at the source. Solid waste is easily picked up, and the turf can be rinsed routinely. Most pet-grade turf carries extended warranties for stain resistance and color durability.

How do I clean and maintain artificial turf?

Maintenance is minimal: brush the blades occasionally to keep them upright, rinse with a hose every few weeks, and remove leaf and stick debris. For pet areas, rinse urine spots and use an enzyme cleaner monthly. There is no mowing, watering, fertilizing, or pesticide application required. The annual time investment is roughly 1-2 hours total for a typical residential lawn.

Does artificial turf drain well?

Quality artificial turf drains better than natural grass: up to 30 inches per hour through the perforated backing. We install a crushed-rock base under the turf that promotes drainage from the surface to the soil below. Standing water is rare when the base is properly prepared and the surface is graded slightly toward existing drainage paths or planting beds.

Will artificial turf fade in the sun?

Premium turf includes UV stabilizers that resist fading for 15-plus years even under California's intense sun. Economy turf may show fading within 5-7 years, especially in dark colors that absorb more heat and UV energy. We only use UV-stabilized products rated for our climate. Most premium brands carry extended color warranties tied to the UV protection compound.

How long does installation take?

Most residential lawns take 2-5 days. A small front lawn (200-300 square feet) can be completed in 2 days. Larger backyards or complex shapes with planting cutouts take 4-5 days. The base preparation (excavating, leveling, compacting, installing crushed rock) is the most time-consuming step and the deciding factor in long-term performance and drainage of the surface.

Can artificial turf be installed on slopes?

Yes, we install turf on slopes up to 30-40 degrees. Slopes require additional base material, edge restraints to prevent slipping, and secure fastening at the perimeter. Proper drainage planning is essential on hillsides since water moves faster across slopes than across flat ground. The turf itself stays in place once properly anchored, even on relatively steep grades.

What's the environmental tradeoff with artificial turf?

It has trade-offs: turf can save significant water annually for an average lawn and eliminates the need for fertilizers, pesticides, and mower emissions. However, it's a petroleum-based product. Many consider the water savings worth it in drought-prone California. *Actual water savings depend on lawn size, irrigation habits, and local climate.

What about weeds with artificial turf?

Weeds are rare with proper installation. We install a weed-barrier fabric beneath the base material, which blocks growth from the soil below. The crushed-rock base layer also provides a poor environment for windblown seeds to germinate. Any occasional weeds that sprout at the perimeter edges are easily pulled by hand. Unlike natural lawns, no herbicide application is needed.

Can I install artificial turf myself?

DIY is possible, but professional installation ensures proper base preparation, drainage, seamless joins between sections, and secure perimeter edges, all critical for the turf to last 15-plus years. Improper installation leads to wrinkles, drainage issues, blade matting, and a noticeably shorter lifespan. The base prep is the part most DIY installs get wrong, and the failure shows up within a year or two.
