Cost variance comes from base depth (patio pavers need 4 inches of compacted Class II base; driveway pavers need 6-8 inches because of the wheel load - about $400-$1,200 add-on for the deeper excavation), edge restraint (we install plastic or metal restraint anchored with 10-inch spikes around the entire perimeter so pavers don't walk outward over time), polymeric sand at the joints (the spec that prevents weeds and joint washout - same labor as standard sand, real difference in lifespan), and demo of the existing surface if applicable. The base is the part of the budget homeowners are most tempted to value-engineer down. Don't.
