Do I need a permit to install a fence?
Most California cities require permits for fences over 6 feet tall or for front-yard fences. Setback rules also vary by municipality, especially on corner lots, where a tall front fence can violate sight-line requirements. Buildda files the permit application and confirms setback and height limits with the local building department before fabrication. The permit fee is a passthrough paid to the city.
How long does fence installation take?
Most residential fence installations take 2-5 days on-site, depending on material, total linear footage, terrain, and weather. The schedule includes setting posts in concrete, which needs 24-48 hours to cure, then attaching rails and boards on a return visit. We provide a specific timeline at the consultation once we measure the run and confirm material availability.
How deep should fence posts be set?
Posts should be buried at least one-third of their total length, plus 6 inches of gravel for drainage at the base. For a 6-foot-tall fence with 8-foot posts, that means about 30 inches deep. We set all posts in concrete with the gravel layer underneath, which is the standard for maximum wind resistance and to prevent post heave during wet seasons.
How do you handle sloped terrain?
Two approaches work for slopes. Stepped fencing installs each panel level, with each panel sitting a few inches higher or lower than the next; this looks crisp on moderate slopes. Racked fencing follows the slope continuously, with the rails and pickets parallel to the ground; this looks better on steeper grades. We recommend the right approach after walking the property at the consultation.
Can you match my neighbor's existing fence?
Yes, we can match most existing fence styles in material, height, picket spacing, and post spacing. We assess the neighboring fence during the consultation, including the rail design and any decorative caps, and quote a matching build. Material weathering means a brand-new section will look slightly newer for the first few years before the colors blend together visually.
What's included in your fence installation price?
The quoted price includes pressure-treated or cedar/redwood posts, rails, boards or panels, post concrete, hardware, gate hinges and latches, and professional installation. Old fence removal and disposal can be added as a line item. The price does not include permit fees (paid directly to the city) or major terrain work like grading, which are quoted separately when applicable.
Do you offer a warranty on fence installation?
Yes. Buildda provides a 2-year workmanship guarantee covering installation-related issues such as post-setting, rail fastening, and gate hardware. Materials carry their own manufacturer warranties against defects, which vary by product line. The combined coverage means installation issues during the workmanship window and material issues during the manufacturer window are both addressed end-to-end.
What type of wood is best for fencing in California?
Cedar and redwood are the strongest choices for California. Both are naturally resistant to rot, insects, and the heat-and-dry-then-rain cycle that breaks down softwood pine over time. Redwood is the premium local option, with the longest lifespan but the highest material cost. Pressure-treated pine is the budget-friendly alternative and requires regular sealing to compensate for the lower natural resistance.
How long does a wood fence last?
With proper maintenance, a cedar or redwood fence typically lasts 20-30 years. Pressure-treated pine lasts 15-20 years under similar conditions. Lifespan depends on staining frequency, drainage at the post base, and direct sunlight exposure. Restaining every 2-3 years (or sealing for natural-finish builds) extends fence life noticeably and prevents the gray-out and surface checking that signal aging.
Should I stain or seal my new wood fence?
Yes, but not immediately. We recommend letting new wood weather for 3-6 months before staining or sealing, which allows residual moisture to dry and lets the wood accept the finish properly. A quality semi-transparent stain or clear UV sealer protects against sun damage and the rain-and-dry cycle. Plan to refresh every 2-3 years on the south- and west-facing sides of the fence.
How long does a vinyl fence last?
Quality vinyl fences typically last 20-30-plus years with minimal maintenance. Many manufacturers offer extended warranties against cracking, peeling, and discoloration, with terms that vary by product line. The plastic itself does not rot or get eaten by insects, but UV exposure over decades does eventually fade the color. Mid-grade vinyl with proper UV inhibitors is the practical sweet spot for California homes.
Does vinyl fencing fade in the California sun?
Quality vinyl contains UV inhibitors that resist fading and yellowing for 20-plus years. Cheaper vinyl can yellow within 5-10 years under direct California sun. We install premium vinyl products with manufacturer color warranties, and we orient the rail-to-stile lock so the unfaded face is the visible side. The color stays consistent across panels through the warranty window.
Is vinyl fencing as strong as wood?
Modern vinyl is engineered to flex and recover rather than crack like wood. Many panel systems include aluminum or steel reinforcement in the rails for added rigidity. Quality vinyl fencing is typically rated for winds up to 110 mph, which exceeds Southern California's typical maximum design wind. The flex-and-recover behavior is the main reason vinyl outlasts wood in storm conditions.
How do I clean a vinyl fence?
A garden hose handles most dust and dirt; spray top to bottom and let it run off. For tougher stains use mild soap and water with a soft brush, never a wire brush or pressure washer at high pressure. No painting, staining, or sealing is ever required, which is the maintenance advantage over wood. Most homeowners clean a vinyl fence once or twice a year.
What colors are available for vinyl fencing?
The most popular colors are white, tan or almond, and gray. Some manufacturers also offer wood-grain textured panels that mimic stained cedar or weathered gray without the maintenance. Color choice is permanent (vinyl cannot be painted reliably), so the consultation is the moment to view physical samples in your yard's actual sunlight before ordering. Sample availability varies by manufacturer.
Can vinyl fencing be repaired if damaged?
Yes. Individual panels, pickets, or rails can be unbolted and replaced without disturbing the rest of the fence, which is a design advantage of modern vinyl systems. The replacement piece needs to match the original product line and color, so keeping the manufacturer documentation matters. Vinyl is durable enough that repairs are rare under normal residential conditions, but the option is there.
How does vinyl fence pricing compare to wood?
Vinyl typically costs 20-40% more upfront than comparable wood fencing. The total-cost calculation favors vinyl when you factor in zero ongoing maintenance (no staining, sealing, or rot repair) and the longer lifespan. Over a 25-year horizon vinyl usually costs less in total than wood. Over a 10-year horizon wood is the cheaper choice if maintenance is consistent and the fence is shaded.
