Low-E Glass
Glass with a thin metallic coating that reflects heat while allowing visible light through, improving window energy efficiency.
Why It Matters for Homeowners
Why it matters: Low-E coatings are the reason a modern double-pane window can deliver better insulation than a triple-pane window from 20 years ago. The metallic coating is microns thin and reflects infrared heat without blocking visible light. In hot climates like LA, the coating goes on the inner surface of the outer pane to reflect heat outward; in cold climates it goes on the inner pane to reflect heat inward. Same coating, different position by climate.
