3. Signs You Need New Gutters

Not sure if your gutters need replacing? Watch for these warning signs:

Visible Damage

Cracks, splits, or holes in the gutter material. Sections that have separated from the house. Gutters that sag or pull away from the fascia board.

Performance Issues

Water overflowing during moderate rain. Gutters that drain slowly or hold standing water. Visible rust or peeling paint on steel gutters.

Collateral Damage

Staining on siding below the gutters. Erosion in landscaping beds near downspouts. Water marks or damage on fascia boards. Basement moisture or foundation cracks that appeared recently.

Age Considerations

Aluminum gutters typically last 20-30 years with proper maintenance. If yours are approaching that age and showing problems, replacement often makes more sense than repeated repairs.

4. The Installation Process

Professional gutter installation typically follows this sequence:

Assessment and Measurement

The installer evaluates your roofline, notes any problem areas, and takes precise measurements. They'll determine proper pitch—gutters need to slope toward downspouts at about a quarter inch per ten feet for proper drainage.

Removal of Old Gutters

Round and rectangular downspouts are both common. Rectangular downspouts handle more water volume and lie flatter against the wall. The choice often comes down to aesthetics and your home's style.

Cleaning Schedule
