Common questions about concrete driveway projects with Buildda

Common Questions

How much does a concrete driveway cost?

Concrete driveways range from $16-$36 per square foot depending on the finish. Standard broom finish runs $16-$20/sq ft, colored concrete $16-$24/sq ft, exposed aggregate $18-$28/sq ft, and stamped concrete $22-$32/sq ft. All pricing includes excavation, base preparation, reinforcement, pouring, finishing, and sealing. Permit fees are quoted separately.

What is the typical thickness of a residential driveway?

Standard residential driveways are 4 inches of concrete over a properly compacted base. For heavier loads (RVs, work trucks, multi-car driveways) the spec moves to 5-6 inches. Reinforcement (rebar or welded wire mesh) is added in either case. Going thicker than spec wastes material; going thinner is the most common cause of premature cracking under repeated vehicle loads over the years.

Why do I need reinforcement in my driveway?

Rebar or welded wire mesh adds tensile strength to the slab, which concrete itself does not have. It controls how cracks form (cracks happen in any concrete; reinforcement keeps them tight and structurally meaningful rather than wide and progressive) and extends the driveway's working lifespan. Skipping reinforcement saves a small amount upfront and costs much more in the first repair down the road.

Can I choose a decorative finish for my driveway?

Yes. We offer stamped concrete, exposed aggregate, colored (integral pigment) concrete, and standard broom finishes. The decorative finish you pick affects cost and lead time, and aging characteristics differ noticeably between finishes. We walk through physical samples during the consultation so you can see how each looks brand-new and how it tends to age over the first few years before making the call.

Does Buildda handle permits and inspections?

It depends on the city and the work, and we can pull permits on your behalf as part of the project scope. Permit fees are not in the quote; you pay the city directly. In Culver City, replacing or widening a driveway takes a Site Improvement permit, plus a Street Use permit if the apron at the street changes; a like-for-like repair with no widening does not need the Site Improvement permit.

How long before I can park on my new driveway?

Wait 7-10 days for normal passenger vehicles to drive on a new driveway. For heavy vehicles (RVs, work trucks, trailers), the recommendation is 28 days for full cure. Walking on the surface is fine after 24-48 hours. Driving too soon causes hairline cracking and tire imprints that lock in permanently because the concrete has not reached full strength yet.

What if the base soil is poor or unstable?

We assess the existing soil before quoting. Soft or expansive soils (common in some LA-area neighborhoods) get graded and compacted, with an additional gravel sub-base for stability when needed. Severely problematic soils may require deeper excavation and a thicker base than the standard 4 inches. The base is what determines whether the driveway lasts decades or starts settling within five years.

Can you work around my landscaping or existing structures?

Yes. We protect adjacent landscaping (trees, shrubs, irrigation lines) with plywood barriers or careful exclusion zones during demolition and pour. Minor modifications may be needed for proper drainage off the new slab, especially when changes to slope direct water toward existing planting or a neighbor's property. The landscape protection plan is reviewed at the consultation so there are no surprises on day one.

How do weather conditions affect the schedule?

Heavy rain delays pouring; the slab cannot be finished correctly when surface water mixes into the wet concrete. Very hot weather (above 90 degrees) accelerates cure to the point where the surface dries before the slab is properly finished. We monitor forecasts and reschedule when conditions risk concrete quality. Most weather delays in LA are 2-3 day adjustments rather than week-long pushes.

Is there a warranty on the concrete itself?

Concrete manufacturers offer limited warranties on the product itself, with terms that vary by mix design and supplier. Buildda provides a 2-year workmanship guarantee covering installation-related issues such as base preparation, reinforcement placement, joint placement, and finishing. The combined coverage means both material defects and installation issues are addressed during the early years of the slab's life on your driveway.

How do I maintain my concrete driveway?

Reseal the driveway every 1-3 years to maintain stain resistance and color (heavier traffic and more direct sun mean more frequent sealing). Rinse oil drips and tree-sap stains promptly so they do not become permanent. Avoid harsh deicers in winter (rare in LA but a real factor in mountain or high-elevation areas), since they accelerate surface deterioration over multiple seasons of use.

Do you offer colored or stained concrete options?

Yes. We can add integral color (pigment mixed into the concrete itself, so the color penetrates the full thickness) or apply concrete stains after the pour for surface color with more variation. Integral color is more durable since chips and scratches do not expose a different layer underneath. Additional charges apply, and the cost varies by finish complexity and color choice.

Will my driveway crack over time?

Yes, every concrete slab develops some cracking as it cures and the soil settles underneath. Strategic control joints (the planned grooves you see every 8-10 feet on a driveway) direct where cracks form so they show up as straight lines rather than random damage. Reinforcement keeps cracks tight and structurally insignificant. The goal of a good install is to control cracking, not eliminate it.

What if I need a driveway expansion or walkway addition?

Let us know at the consultation. We can integrate expansions or matching sidewalks into the same project, which typically costs less than two separate visits and allows the colors and finishes to be matched at the same pour. Local codes and existing space allowances are the practical limits, especially for setbacks from property lines and existing structures like fences or planter walls.

Is Buildda properly licensed?

Yes. Buildda holds California Contractors State License Board license #1131088, classification B (General Building Contractor). For specialty trades like electrical (C-10) and plumbing (C-36) we use licensed sub-contractors as required by California BPC 7057(b). License status, bond, and workers' compensation insurance can be verified directly at cslb.ca.gov before signing any contract.

Can I finance my concrete driveway project?

Yes. We work with multiple trusted lenders, and the right financing option depends on your project size and credit profile. We pull together the available options during the no-obligation consultation so you can compare them against a credit card or HELOC. Specific dollar amounts and rates vary by lender and applicant, so we do not quote financing details upfront on the website.

How do I get started?

Contact Buildda for a no-obligation on-site consultation. We measure the driveway, photograph any existing damage, and review the drainage off the slab. After the visit you receive an itemized quote, typically within a few business days. From there you pick the finish (broom, exposed aggregate, integral color, or stamped) and we file the permit and schedule the pour.

Do you offer emergency repair services for cracked or damaged driveways?

Yes. We handle urgent repairs to address tripping hazards, large cracks letting water under the slab, or damage that creates a safety issue at the property entrance. Send a photo or a short description to the office number to start the conversation; small repairs can often be scheduled within a week or two depending on crew availability and the severity of the damage to your driveway.
