Buildda Tip
A fence is only as strong as its posts. We set every post in concrete at the proper depth for your soil type and fence height - minimum 24 inches for a 6-foot fence. Shortcuts on post setting lead to leaning fences within a few years.

Fencing in Pacific Palisades has been fundamentally reconsidered since the January 2025 fire. Traditional wood privacy fencing - the standard choice for decades - became fuel that carried fire from property to property across the Highlands and upper Riviera neighborhoods. Homeowners rebuilding or replacing fences are now weighing fire resistance alongside privacy, aesthetics, and cost in a way that did not happen before the fire.
Fire-resistant fencing materials are the primary conversation in the Palisades right now. Metal fencing - steel, aluminum, and wrought iron - is inherently non-combustible and is the safest choice in the VHFHSZ. Horizontal steel slat fencing in powder-coated dark finishes has become the most popular option for homeowners who want both fire safety and a modern aesthetic. Aluminum panel fencing offers similar fire resistance at lower weight and cost, though it does not have the structural rigidity of steel for tall installations. For homeowners who want the warmth of wood appearance without the combustibility, composite fencing products made from recycled plastic and wood fiber offer improved fire resistance compared to solid wood, though they are not completely non-combustible and will eventually melt and deform under sustained heat exposure.
The wood versus metal debate in post-fire Pacific Palisades is not as simple as metal wins. Many homeowners in Castellammare and the Riviera have historically used wood fencing - cedar, redwood, and ipe - because it integrates visually with the natural canyon landscape. Replacing all wood fencing with metal changes the neighborhood character significantly. Some homeowners are choosing a hybrid approach: metal structural posts and framing with wood or composite infill panels that can be replaced if damaged. Others are selecting fire-treated wood products that have been pressure-impregnated with fire retardant chemicals to achieve a Class A fire rating. We discuss all options and their tradeoffs honestly - there is no single right answer for every property.
Hillside and slope fence engineering is a constant challenge in the Palisades regardless of material choice. The Santa Monica Mountains topography means very few properties have level fence lines. Posts need to be set at varying depths depending on the slope angle and soil conditions, and panels or infill sections need to be stepped or racked to follow the grade. On steep slopes, we set posts in concrete footings sized to resist the lateral soil pressure that hillside movement creates. Retaining wall integration is common on properties where the grade change between neighboring lots exceeds two to three feet - the fence sits atop or adjacent to a retaining wall that handles the structural load while the fence provides privacy.
Wildlife corridors are a genuine consideration for Palisades fencing. The community borders the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, and deer, coyotes, bobcats, and smaller wildlife move through residential properties regularly. Solid privacy fencing can block these established corridors, pushing wildlife into streets and creating vehicle collision hazards. Some Palisades homeowners deliberately leave gaps at the base of fencing or install wildlife-friendly designs that allow smaller animals to pass through while maintaining privacy at eye level. We discuss wildlife patterns with homeowners during the design phase, especially on properties that border open space or canyon edges.
Canyon view preservation is another factor that influences fence design in the Palisades. Properties with views of Temescal Canyon, the ocean, or the mountain ridgeline need fencing solutions that provide privacy from neighbors without blocking the panoramic views that drive property values. Cable railing systems, glass panel inserts, and horizontal metal slat designs with spacing calibrated to the view angle are common solutions. The balance between privacy and view preservation is property-specific and usually requires an on-site consultation to get right.
LADBS governs fence permits in Pacific Palisades. Standard fences up to 6 feet in height on the side and rear property lines and 3.5 feet in the front yard typically do not require a permit. Fences exceeding these heights, fences on retaining walls, and fences in the public right-of-way require permits and may trigger plan check review. Properties in the Coastal Zone may also need California Coastal Commission approval for fencing that affects public views or coastal access. We verify all permit requirements before starting any Palisades fence project.
